Recommendations for Vehicles Parked for a Long Time During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Tires are not designed to carry the load of a vehicle for a prolonged period of parking. Parking vehicles for a longer period of time can cause flat spotting on the tire tread area, which is in contact with the ground. Below is some guidance for how to keep your tires safe during the stoppage time, and how to prepare them for getting back on the road as soon as the travelling restrictions are lifted:
-> Keep the recommended inflation pressure in your tires during the prolonged parking time. Increasing the pressure by 10% during the prolonged parking will reduce the chances of developing flat spotting.
-> It is recommended to check the tire pressure every 15 days. If this is not possible, be sure to do so at least once a month and refill where needed.
-> If you notice a reduction in pressure by 15% or more in Truck/Bus tires or 20% or more in Van/Car tires, remove the tire and check for any possible punctures or damage for repair.
-> Park your vehicle away from direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the development of ozone cracking on the sidewall of the tire. If it is not possible to park the vehicle in shade, try to cover the tires to avoid direct sunlight.
-> Try to move the vehicle at least once a month. If this is not possible, rotate the tires to change their contact position with the ground.
-> Make sure to clear all stones and debris below the tire contact area with the ground, as this can cause damage to the tire.
-> Before restarting the operation, check all tires and adjust the inflation pressure recommended by Giti Tire or your vehicle manufacturer.
